Dear Sailors,

We are the women of the Lake Pontchartrain Women’s Sailing Association. We are the only sailing group for women that draw members from all the clubs on Lake Pontchartrain, as well as women who are not affiliated with any yacht club. If you are a sailor, or a wanna-be sailor, we invite you to join our club.

Our membership consists of women, men and juniors—anyone who shares our goal: to increase women’s participation in sailing. Here are some of our activities for the coming year:

1. With Southern Yacht club, we will host the GYA Women’s Championship, the Fleur De Lis Regatta (March 31 and April 1)

2. With New Orleans Yacht Club and North Sails, we will sponsor a five- race Wednesday Night Series.

3. With South Shore Yacht Club and Sintes Boat Works, we recruit women to sail in the Pam Sintes Memorial Regatta

4. October 13, at NOYC, we will host our Pink Ribbon Regatta. The PRR supports the work of the Louisiana Breast Cancer Task Force, a Louisiana charity. The LBCTF is a group of women, mostly cancer survivors themselves, who fund various breast cancer related projects within the state of Louisiana. We consistently raise $10,000 or more that help the Task Force donate imaging machines to rural Louisiana clinics and other worthy projects. The LBCTF also funds breast reconstruction for cancer victims who do not have insurance.
5. At NOYC, we man a hospitality table every Wednesday night to connect new people with skippers who need crew for Wednesday Night racing. In 2011 we placed dozens of men and women on sailboats. Some were never seen again .Some made new friends, and some became valuable crew, some even bought their own boats, putting more sailors on the water. This is how we increase our numbers, one sailor at a time.

6. We revived rafting- up on the Lake for events like watching fireworks on the Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day.

7. Several times during the year we hold educational sessions to help new people learn sailing skills. In past years we have sponsored match racing clinics, GPS seminars, knot tying classes, and basic diesel seminars.

This year, we will continue with these activities. We will also concentrate on refinishing and rigging our Flying Scot, Hull # 245.

Like most sailing clubs on the Gulf Coast, we are rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina... Please hang burgee in your club.

We invite anyone who shares our goals to participate in our activities and join our club. Membership is $50 per year, $25 for juniors

our next informational session will be the Knot Tea Party on Wednesday February 29th. We will drink tea and review basic sailing knots. We will have some knot tying contests also. Please join us and bring ladies who are sailors or who want to be sailors.
