The Coco Seemann Regatta, hosted by
Southern Yacht Club, is dedicated to the memory of Coco Seemann. Coco
was active in racing for many years, both on Lake Pontchartrain and on the
Gulf Coast.
Her first victory was posted in 1936, while sailing The Sorcerer, a
twenty-one footer. By 1955 she had led four Knost teams to victory for
Southern . She qualified for SYC's Lipton team in a grueling 12 race round
robin series and placed second in her cup race August 31st, 1952 in St.
Petersburg, Florida.
Coco was the first from our area to qualify for the Francis Adams
Trophy, the US Sailing Women's Championship. Along with crew members
Marion Clerc and Janet Lorber, she competed for the national title in
Riverside, Connecticut in 1954. Sailing the Quincy Adams Sloop for the
first time, the team placed fourth after winning the final race.
In 1997 her son, Bill Seemann, dedicated the trophy to encourage
competition among women in one-design keel boats. The regatta was hosted
by Pass Christian Yacht Club for several years, where the competition was
held in L-16's. In 2001 Rhodes 19's were chosen and for the last two years
the regatta has been in J/22's.
The Coco Seemann Cup, a beautiful silver loving cup, has been inscribed
and mounted on a custom made mahogany base. Plates with the winning
skippers and crews surround the cup. It is currently on display in the
Southern Yacht Club lobby. |
