Coco Seemann
2007 Regatta

Regatta organizers never try to guess what the weather gods will bestow on the fleet,
but this year’s weather for the Coco Seemann Women’s Keelboat Regatta was exactly
the opposite of what had been forecast. A tropical depression that moved across the
Gulf promised to bring stormy weather with winds of 35-40 knots and the RC wisely
decided to postpone the 5 race series until Sunday, when lighter breeze was predicted.
However, the system fizzled out as it moved ashore and no one could predict that by
Saturday afternoon the lake would be glassy. The postponement was indeed a wise
decision but for the wrong reasons!

Sunday morning saw competitors sailing in 6 to 8 knots of wind with wind shifts of
20 to 30 degrees. The mark set boat was kept busy moving the weather mark in
each of the three races. And because of the shifty winds, the lead in each of the
races changed hands several times. Leading the fleet with finishes of 1-1-3 was
Louise Bienvenu of the Corinthian Sailing Association. In second place was
Mamsie Manard of SYC (2-3-1), followed by Elaine Boos, of SYC (3-2-2) and
Dee Mollenkopf of NYC (4-4-4).

At the trophy presentation, the newly repaired Coco Seemann Cup,
a beautiful sterling loving cup donated by Bill Seemann and his family,
was presented to Louise and her crew, Lisa Luongo and Deanna Vandiver.
It was thought that the cup had been lost during Hurricane Katrina but
it survived, albeit badly damaged, and was restored to its original beauty
by a silversmith. A new base is being created and will contain plaques
with the names of the winning skippers and crew members.
